Bees/Apiaries

This program emphasizes registration of honeybee colonies located in the County so that notification of nearby applications of pesticides, toxic to bees, can be issued. Department staff may, on request, inspect and certify the health of registered honeybee colonies. The Program also involves enforcement of the County Bee Ordinance with respect to complaints of improperly placed apiaries that adversely impact local residents.

Apiary owners are required to register with the Agricultural Commissioner and document the location of their hives so we can notify them of pending pesticide applications and other concerns affecting their bees.

When bees are visiting a site scheduled for an application with a pesticide that is toxic to bees, please give at least a 48-hour advance notice. U.C. Davis IPM bee precaution pesticide ratings can be used to determine if the pesticide you are using is harmful to bees or their brood.
