Invasive Weeds

Invasive weeds in California interfere with ranching, farming, recreation, and habitat conservation. Because many of these species are dispersed by human activities, knowledgeable citizens can help to prevent new weed infestations and combat those already in place.

If you see an unusual weed species growing on your property and would like to have it identified, or for more information on this program, please reach out to our office via email or by calling (209) 754-6504

What invasive weeds are we on the lookout for in Calaveras County?

Invasive weeds are not all the same when it comes to removal. Multiple factors designate whether a found species should require immediate action or simply be watched. Our County follows the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Action-Oriented Rating System.

“A” rated weeds are pests of known economic or environmental detriment that have yet to be established in California. They are our top priority for eradication.

“B” rated weeds are pests of known economic or environmental detriment, but they have a wider distribution in California. Depending on the size and distribution of the infestation, “B” rated weeds are prioritized for eradication or management.

“C” rated weeds are pests of known economic or environmental detriment, but they are widely distributed in California. “C” rated weeds are less prioritized for eradication and management.

How can you become more involved in keeping invasive weeds out of your community?

Calaveras County’s Department of Agriculture is part of the Central Sierra Partnership Against Weeds (CSPAW). The mission of CSPAW is to work towards the control, reduction, and/or elimination of non-native, invasive weeds that constitute a threat to the economy and well-being of the residents of Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties. The two major goals to accomplish this mission are through public education and weed control. CSPAW meets quarterly and is open to residents, businesses, nonprofits, and government partner members.
