Wildlife Conflict Resources and Reporting

As interactions between humans, livestock, pets, and wildlife become more frequent, public safety and the protection of agricultural operations remain a top priority. The Calaveras County Department of Agriculture, in coordination with the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), is urging residents to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to minimize conflicts with local wildlife.

Below are some protective measures that residents are encouraged to implement:

  • Avoid leaving food outdoors, including pet food: Accessible food sources attract wildlife, such as raccoons and skunks. In turn, these animals may attract larger predators to residential areas.
  • Ensure all enclosures are secure and maintained: Regular inspection of enclosures or fencing for weak points and gaps prevents easy access for predatory animals.
  • Provide secure nighttime shelter for livestock: Predatory animals are often nocturnal; secure shelters limit their access when they are most active.
  • Utilize deterrents: Motion-activated lights, noise makers, and livestock guardian dogs can discourage wildlife from approaching and keep them at a safe distance.

In the event of predator-related incidents, residents should report directly to the Calaveras County Department of Agriculture. Depending on the incident, a USDA Wildlife Specialist will be assigned to the case and can further assist with information and a possible site evaluation.

*If there is an immediate threat to human life by a predator, call 911*

Additionally, reports of wildlife incidents should be shared with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Reports can be submitted through the Wildlife Incident Reporting (WIR) system or by calling the Region 2 Hotline.
